mechanical,electrical, or industrial engineering degrees. Upon further explanation, the alumni clarified thatwhat they meant by this statement was that they did not use their disciplinary expertise. Theydid, however, emphasize the ways that the abilities they acquired in their engineering education-- namely technical problem solving, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork -- werewhat allowed them to succeed as engineers. To the surprise of our current students, the panelistsall agreed that one of the most useful classes they took was public speaking. Chan et al.identify 38 skills including critical thinking, conflict management, and time management [5]. Astudy of practicing engineers in New Zealand maintained the importance of communication andethics but added career planning, leadership, and project management [6]. Infrastructure should be taken hereas a widely inclusive term, with many systems and meta-systems (the health care system,electrical power, information technology, transportation, etc.) providing the framework for suchstudies. The how of such a course, what such a course might consist of, possible course syllabi,models and the like, is presented by Hart et al. (2011), but this paper seeks to address a verydifferent question; why require such a course, particularly for non-engineers.
