Figure 2, the significant decrease in Chemistry DFW rates from fall2014 to fall 2015 could be the addition of a new course, Chemistry for Engineers as well as theassignment of a gifted teacher to that course. Previously, engineering students only had theoption of taking General Chemistry for their chemistry course. The fall 2015 was the first timeChemistry for Engineers was offered for engineering majors. The Chemistry DFW rate wentfrom 46.6 percent down to 25 percent between the semesters for engineering majors only.To circumvent the high DFW rate shown in Mathematics and Chemistry, the School ofEngineering turned toward the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program. Social responsibility is embodied in theEngineer’s Creed and is directly related to engineering ethics [10], so much so that theengineering accrediting agency ABET requires that graduates can approach their work in asocially responsible manner [11]. The principles of social responsibility are what attract manystudents to engineering, specifically those from underrepresented groups [12]. AIM was an undertaking thatcould have ended poorly. The engineering team took a thoughtful approach to decidinghow best to introduce new challenges that better represented the types of learningactivities that rising high school seniors could expect to be engaged in at this academicinstitution.This undertaking also gave the Engineering Department an opportunity to discuss how itcan leverage its curriculum for outreach and recruitment. One such organization, NAVAIR, sent senior engineers toconduct guest lectures in the class that were in line with syllabus at different points through outthe semester.
