Mentors and role models weredefined in this study as “persons of influence” on a respondent’s academic decisions; mentorsgive advice and support, whereas role models provide inspiration. Results indicate that having aperson of influence was significantly and positively correlated with students’ constructioneducation self-efficacy and motivation (rs = 0.19, p < 0.001 and rs = 0.26, p < 0.001,respectively). roughly 200 college students. Two of the threescales have strong internal reliability with Cronbach alpha reliability measures of 0.73 forconstruct 1) and 0.90 for construct 2). The third is weaker with a Cronbach alpha of 0.3, clearlycalling for a closer examination and alteration of the survey questions. Each of the scalesaccounts for 68%, 63% and 51% of the variance, respectively. We present evidence of validityfor the three scales.
