A lab automationsystem with virtual networking would enable a more realistic environment akin to the real world. Our design utilizes VMware software such as ESXi server, Virtual Center and Lab Manager toprovide a robust virtual environment. The experimental results suggest an improved classroomenvironment for learning Intrusion Detection Systems and related software; in addition, theclassroom environment

Introductory Design CourseTeamwork and Collaboration are among the three primary competencies needed for graduates tobe successful in the workplace according to the Committee on Defining Deeper Learning and21st Century Skills organized by the National Research Council.1 The committee reviewed eightthematic reports and subsequently presented a framework intended to inform curriculumprograms of these desired skills. Organizations and criteria governing the accreditation ofvarious higher education disciplines also address the need for teamwork skills. Several studentoutcomes in the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission2 specifically relate tocollaborative work: 3(d): an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams 3(g): an ability to

important components of the engineering education.Experimentation and reporting of results are major parts of the laboratory experience. In a laboratory, studentsseek an experimental answer to a question. Depending upon the complexity of the question, a single or manyphysical variables are measured and the results are determined. This process may require application of varioustransducers and measurement equipment that individually or combined provide experimental data that maybeused to deduce the result. However, experimentation is not just data collection. Students are expected to learnand master a systematic approach to experimentation by dividing the experimental program (i.e., the process ofobtaining the desired result) into different phases

for power systems. Nonlinearloads, such as the power supplies for electronic devices, introduce harmonic currents into the power system, which can cause failures in power system equipment as well as in other loads. Evidence of harmonic problemsinclude circuit breakers tripping when they shouldn’t or failing to trip when they should, overheated neutralconductors or transformers, erratic operation or tripping of adjustable speed drives, blown power factorcorrection capacitors, and communication interference. The problems are different, but their causes are related. Since every user of the power system contributes to the problem, I believe all electrical engineers andtechnicians need to have a basic understanding of power quality issues
