Regarding course-related factors, students mentioned the complexity and the amount ofcontent, the constructive alignment of course teaching and assessment methods and theamount of workload, besides their perceptions on how the course content and activities arerelevant for real life applications. Concerning faculty-related factors, students alluded to thewillingness of faculty to provide support and guidance to students, in addition to facultyteaching skills to explain complex content and to plan learning-oriented classes. Mechatronics is concerned with the integration of mechanical, electronic, and control systems. Because of the university’s location in an urban manufacturingcenter that requires engineers conversant in both mechanical and electrical design, it

Data collectedfrom these anonymous surveys provided real-time formative feedback that helped faculty to reactjust in time to address issues related to student learning process. In addition to providingcontinuous feedback, this process has also shown to help students develop their metacognitiveknowledge and therefore become more responsible towards their academic success. It alsohelped the instructor to understand the cognition profile of the student cohort to ultimately adaptthe course content, pedagogy, and assessment to achieve an optimal learner-centric environment. The effectiveness of this approach was verified by assessing the students’ performance in pre andpost exams. Our exploration ofthe role of mental health in engineering culture includes student, staff, and faculty perspectives.Understanding these issues will aid in the development of strategies to address a national concernof rapidly rising numbers of undergraduates who are experiencing mental health problems. Weare in need of proactive solutions to address mental health challenges before they develop insteadof only relying on reactive solutions (e.g. offering more counselors for students who have mentalhealth challenges). Understanding how students resist the notion of a high-stress culture inengineering and cope positively will contribute to the development

Subversion is that students cannot browse torepositories, but must know the precise name of a repository. For faculty, one issue is the time ittakes for creation of repositories, although we have created some tools to semi-automate the task.Another faculty issue is retrieval of work products for review and grading. This can be alleviatedby using conventions for repository locations.Four years ago, several practices were adopted in one of the SE courses with the intent onincreasing success rates1. These practices included specific work plans, periodically monitoredtime logs, and periodically monitored version control check-ins. The assumption was thatstudents often fail due to procrastination and that they need to be “encouraged” to start

In addition, it may be helpful for former interns to participate in the seminars to offer their perspectives and experiences to the current interns. These issues have been partially addressed in the new Teaching Practicum course which requires students to meet regularly for seminars with faculty to discuss various aspects of teaching. This course also requires reading assignments which cover a variety of issues related to teaching. Page 1.176.5
