students through a series of activities and resources todevelop research skills and knowledge [46]. AMPP selected four of the manuals’ core principlesas focus areas of training: developing effective communication in the mentoring relationship, aligning expectations between mentors and mentees, fostering mentees’ research independence, and promoting mentees’ professional development. AMMP’s unique approach is at the program design. The program is organized into aseries of five parallel training sessions for mentors and mentees, each session addressing a singletraining theme: (1) effective communication, (2) researcher independence, (3) expectationalignment, (4) networking, and (5) individual development plan. Mentors are introduced to thetopic

This isan extra burden of time, energy, and other resources for WOC on top of their rigorousengineering curriculum. The three main themes that revealed the double standard in these six participants’ experienceswere microaggressions, engineering socialization, and isolation. Table 3 defines these themes Page 6and identifies the subcodes associated with them. These themes emerged across the experiencesof these WOC to reveal a double standard in engineering education. Within this engineeringeducation environment, the systems

There are severalchallenges in developing a robust, actionable U.S. STEM educational policy and ecosystem.Educational initiatives over the last 20 years have not produced the required improvements inmath, science, or reading literacy to address the qualified STEM workforce deficit. After the pitches, the judges had 30 minutes to examineeach group’s poster and to probe the students deeper on their projects. The top five groupsreceived a free private consultation session with a local start-up incubator to explore ways toextend their idea and discuss potential business opportunities that can be derived from theirprojects.Student reaction during this process reinforced the stifling of creativity endemic to engineeringeducation at our university. One student in particular was very flustered because she was “notused to having to be creative in school” and did not know how to

research highlights the profoundly social nature of design (e.g., [3], [4], [5]) whereinpersonal values, beliefs, and social practices infuse all aspects of the design process, bearing outin team interactions, design decision-making, and the final design products themselves. AsBucciarelli [3] states, “Design is, in process, a social process and it demands an account thatsearches for the true significance of technical constraint, values and norms on the form of theartefact in the everyday thought, expressed beliefs, and practice of participants” (p. 185). In thisway, ethical decision-making in engineering design is interwoven with these social processes [6],[7]. In collaborative design teams, members must negotiate understandings of ‘what is

To this end, the learning objectives for the summerresearch students were:After completion of the research project, students should be able to 1. write testable hypotheses 2. design and carry-out experiments in a reproducible way 3. analyze data and identify key findings 4. communicate findings in written, visual and verbal formThe final deliverables of a research project included a research paper to be archived in theuniversity’s library system, a poster and/or oral presentation given to an internal audience and anexternal audience if feasible (depends on timing and funding), and records of physical lab

These related issues were motivation for TECH-REDI to lead an effort tocreate a university supported virtual organization based on principles of an SPK. The virtualorganization and slightly revised definitions of ARC Program Areas are the platform for theregional initiative for administering economic development. The ARC grant provided leverageto develop the SPK which can be characterized as follows:  An appreciation of a system: A systems approach enables regional development stakeholders to view the economic environment of the region in terms of internal and external interrelated component

Mental health awarenessweeks on campuses often include mindfulness sessions, yoga classes, and lectures on thegrowing mental illness rates within academia and the college-aged population. While these dohelp raise awareness and provide opportunities for student to practice techniques to improve theirmental health, three key problems can be identified in leveraging only these interventions: (1)one week of heightened support does not suffice for an entire year, (2) attending events can addadditional time-stress to already time-stressed students, and (3) these events do not address theunderlying problems that led to mental illness within students [8].
