improvement, and future work will focus onassessing the impact of the CLICK approach on students’ learning, motivation, and preparationto be successful engineers, areas which could translate to a STEM pipeline for the futureworkforce.1. IntroductionThe typical curricula for students majoring in engineering involve a set of courses that areordered in a sequence in which each course provides the students with the required knowledge totake the next course in this sequence [1]. The structure of the Industrial Engineering (IE)curriculum is no exception. The courses in these curricula are usually taught by differentinstructors. This traditional course-centric curriculum structure is limited in its ability to establishthe connection between fundamental

. While this course uses active learning approaches and team projects, the scope of theircontents distinguish them from similar courses that seek to achieve improved graduation andretention rates. For instance, in this course, soft skills such as technical writing, use of Excel, developing an individual academic plan of study, cooperative education, internships, culturaldiversity, quality, safety, and ethics are covered. Basic technical skills covered include math, mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering technology. The rationale for this course is toexpose students to these subjects and topics before they enroll in core engineering technologycourses such as applied statics.Assessment of learning:While the author plans to conduct this

toadopt the INSPIRES Curriculum, the cost of implementation has been kept low and significantprofessional development for teachers is offered.Although the INSPIRES Curriculum is designed around specific content areas, a primary focus ison the development of transferable skills that we believe are foundational for success in the studyof STEM-related fields. These skills are often neglected in high school curricula yet must bedeveloped for students to succeed in undergraduate science and engineering programs. The keyskills targeted by the INSPIRES Curriculum include: • The ability to work effectively in teams & communicate technical ideas orally & in writing • The ability to solve open-ended problems • The ability to synthesize

This paper describes the “why and how to” --detailing the origins, structure and operation of the program. A companion paper attempts toanswer the question of “how well we did” -- as gleaned from the early results of assessmentactivities and instruments. American engineering ethics educators oftenembrace one of three major approaches: a deontological approach that emphasizesprofessional codes of ethics, a sociological approach that stresses the social context ofengineering, and a critical approach that highlights the need to unpack and questiondominant assumptions in engineering thinking and professional practice. skills intoengineering curricula. As a result, engineering education is starting to change. One major area of change in engineering education is in design. Although design is widely considered asthe most distinguishing and fundamental activity of engineering [1], most curricula have it either isolatedin the senior year or sometimes also in the first year. Now, as the engineering curriculum has progressed, first year design courses, known as the cornerstone engineering courses, and fourth year design courses, referred to as capstone courses, have seen increased development as well [1]. However, these capstonecourses serve as the only standard opportunity across engineering education for undergraduateengineering students to showcase their engineering
