a traditionalmechanical engineering materials course (that originally comprised a lecture and physical lab)with a learning module that included simulated VLs to enhance students’ engineering intuitionfor predicting material testing results. The VL was also used to expose students to design andsimulation software that was deemed to be critical for research and industry settings. Of the 51 respondents, there were 3 sophomores, 29 juniors, 3 students who were intheir 4th of 5 years, 11 seniors, 3 Masters, 1 PhD, and 1 “transfer” student. 41 of the 51 studentswere in some type of engineering program, which included biomedical, chemical, civil,electrical, environmental, industrial, mechanical, and optical engineering. 16 of the 51respondents were female, whereas 35 were male. The gender and academic status of students ona course-by-course basis is presented in Table 4. Therefore, asystem must be created which monitors product development so as to ensure that the finalproduct does meet those specifications. This latter requirement implies a system which allowsintervention to correct problems as they develop to prevent products from failing to meet designrequirements4.
