West Point Bridge Designer (WPBD) software was developed to provide students with arealistic introduction to engineering through the design of a steel truss bridge. WPBD users can: • graphically create a structural model; • define the material and mechanical properties of each structural member; • run a simulated load test to determine if the structure is strong enough to carry a standard, code-specified loading; • display an animation of the load test, with members color-coded to indicate tension (blue), compression (red), and internal force-to-strength ratios (color intensity); • modify the design to strengthen any inadequately designed members; and • minimize the cost of the design, by modifying member

Engineering component of AIM.There were several factors that influenced the decision to replace ARoW. This sectionwill address those motivations.ARoW was resource intensive. One team kit consisted of several hundred parts,including motors, a radio controller, mixer and receivers, as well as tools. Each kit wascontained in four cases, stored in a 20 cubic foot bin. In addition to the kits used byparticipants, there were pool liners and lumber for the pools, tarps and rolls of carpet toplace the pools on, pumps and other support materials. After every use, parts needed tobe replaced and/or repaired. The size of the kits and support equipment meant specialarrangements were required to ship kits for outreach activities.
