PomonaAbstractService learning is an innovative training technique where a service project or service experienceis incorporated in an academic course and is evaluated as part of the course overall grade. In thispaper, we present the design, implementation, and outcomes of a senior project capstone coursewhere service learning content and K-12 outreach activities are incorporated. We collaboratedwith a community partner, Ganesha High School in Pomona city, to provide students withservice learning experiences. The first course project includes an outreach seminar to introducesolar energy to the high school students and an A-to-Z project to build a solar charging station. The second course project includes developing computer programs and teaching the high

Time pressure for thesecadets is intense, leading in many cases to lower academic performance than cadets are capableof demonstrating. Many struggle to learn effective time management in this environment.Leaders at the Academy have been evaluating how to potentially reduce the time pressure toimprove the end result for graduates. This paper presents the development of a dynamic systemsimulation, called CadetSIM, that can assist cadets with time management decisions and that canprovide insight to institutional decision-makers.The environment at the U.S. Air Force Academy was analyzed at the system level in terms oftime requirements. Just as is the case for the traditional research universities, business incubators atregional universities provide the supporting infrastructure that permits the university faculty totake advantage of SBIR and STTR programs to launch businesses and move university IP towardcommercialization. In addition, the formation of a university-managed business incubatorprovides an excellent environment for non-university established technology businesses

Workshop3.1 Opportunities for DMTL to advance STEM LearningThe current research in DMTL was initiated as a synchronous problem-based learning spin-off ofa project on lockdown digitized assessment conducted by the Investigators [4]. The currentresearch was initiated to investigate viable approaches to integrating student design teams intoin-class activities to obtain and acquire the skills required to design a system, component, orprocess, and to function on multi-disciplinary design teams, which are an ABET accreditationcriteria for engineering degree programs. As depicted in Figure 3, DMTL utilizes one suchproblem-based learning approach, whereby students acquire expertise while applying skills insolving open-ended problems based upon some trigger

the engineering competencies calledfor by ABET and the Engineer of 2020 [5] – [7]. This challenge increases with larger class sizes, which are often encountered in first-year engineering programs [8]. The strain on resourcesimposed by large courses frequently necessitates grading by less expensive—and lessexperienced—graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants, whose inexperience often leads toa variety of grading inconsistencies [9], [10].Based in the context of a large-scale engineering course, this study frames the grading process asa large, complex socio-technical system consisting of elements that are both human (i.e., graders, students, and content designers) and non-human (i.e., rubrics, assignments, and student work). As the

paper presents the design of the introduction to machine learning (ML) course at the University of Virginia. This course is targeted toward first and second-year undergraduate students and has no prerequisite courses beyond the introduction to program- ming course; notably, there are no linear algebra nor probability prerequisites. A key design feature of the course is that it is entry level but emphasizes the mathematical perspective of ML and conceptual understanding behind ML algorithms. This course presents the basic prin- ciples behind ML to make ML feel less like a “black box” and covers a range of applications, focusing on applications in the electrical engineering field. First, we will implement the strategy design pattern sothat our system can work with databases which are managed by MySQL, Oracle, and MicrosoftSQL Server. The second one involves generating natural language description of an autogenerated SQL query using textual generation algorithms.
