They include: • Problems with storage and administration. • Cost in terms of evaluator time and effort. • Challenge of establishing reliable and valid rating criteria. • Concern of faculty that a hidden agenda of the process is to validate their grading or evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching

These systemsprovide excellent mechanisms for developing new leaders amongst the cohort of graduating students [12].Studies of engineering capstones have revealed much variation in terms of course duration, projectsources, project funding, faculty involvement, and team assignments [13]. Factors influencing this qualityinclude: the amount and type of involvement of outside professionals and experts with relevant designexperience, length of the course (one or two semesters), student/faculty ratio in the class, the number offaculty involved who have significant engineering design experience, and available resources such ascomputer labs equipped with a full suite of modern design application software [14].Desjardins et al. Existing and new resources will bedeveloped for these activities for delivery in an asynchronous mode. The language ofcommunication between the team members will be English, however, each team will be providedlanguage assistance by an upper division student in French-Engineering dual major. Teams willcommunicate electronically to solve the design problem. This will include electronic mail, theworld wide web, chat groups, fax, teleconferencing and videoconferencing. They will also haveavailable identical software programs and videoconferencing software with document sharingcapabilities.Project 2 - Independent

Problems that future engineers will face may requireknowledge and understanding from several fields outside of their areas of expertise.Graduates should have the ability to teach themselves new concepts and apply information tonew and unfamiliar situations.[11] A major concern is how to introduce library skills duringthe freshman year.Engineering 0081 - Freshman SeminarENGR0081 is a course that explains the university policies and procedures to the students. As part ofproject-based experiential and interactive learning, we have chosen energy innovation as ourtheme. The goal is to design, build, and demonstrate innovative systems for energy productionand/or transfer. As a part of our learning approach, we follow these steps: The first step is a case study of an exciting energy system. That is, doing research on the system design and its potential innovation. We were strongly encouraged to interact with faculties/researchers at the institute or in the area institutes (Appendix 1) Second, we need to complete and present the case study in two weeks. Third

In order to attract and retain an outstanding faculty, Virginia Tech mustincreasingly address issues related to the employment of faculty spouses and partners. Theseissues are particularly important for women faculty, since women are more likely to be marriedto other professionals, especially academics, than their male colleagues. It was thebeginning of a new Virginia Tech (VT) engineering/education collaboration that was completelyunfathomable a year earlier.Since NSF’s intent with the “Bridges” solicitation was, in part, to improve engineeringpedagogy, the group quickly expanded to include two educational psychologists. One wasDirector of VT’s Center for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, who already had workingexperience with some engineering faculty on issues relating to pedagogy. The other was theDirector of the new School of Education. This working group thus had a good balance ofengineering and education faculty who were eager to work together on a proposal they felt hadgreat potential for fostering long-lasting collaboration. To

In New York State, for example, an engineering student who wants to become a scienceor math teacher is forced to take 15 - 20 additional credits in science or math, as well as 18education credits. To become a technology teacher requires a completely new undergraduatedegree in technology education, which can no longer be obtained anywhere in New York City.During the past year and a half, faculty members from four engineering schools have met withofficials from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to propose a newcertification path in K-12 Technology Education for recent engineering graduates as well asengineers returning from industry. The NYSED enthusiastically supports the idea, for severalreasons. The transition from

The final section focuses on assessment techniques to be used formativelyto revise the modules according to student and faculty feedback.Design of Web-Based ModulesThe first challenge of this project was to break down the content we wished to cover into smaller“lessons” that would make that subject “live” for students. We started by setting objectives foreach subtopic and building a lesson to meet those objectives. For instance, for the Credibility ofSources module we knew we wanted to cover “how to evaluate” sources of information, especially web sources, as well as the whole issue of how to decide what information needs to

explicitly. One class approached it as a problem in engineering design. The otheraddressed it in terms of the emergency preparedness and planning effort in New Orleans. Thelatter is certainly closer to public policy than engineering design is, but it still focused more onwhat happened rather than what was planned or what policies drove the planning. In fact, the unfolding events and coverage, which still continues, made a top down approachrather impractical. Yet both instructors found that a great many policy issues were raised by thestudents in their projects and these are summarized and reported here. This is, then, an inductiveand student centered approach to engineering and public policy. We report on a “found policy”equivalent to what is

That is, faculty focus on “the research, ideas, and conclusions anddirect comments towards what they clearly perceive to be the science content rather than spendtime on what they perceive to be more general, less technical writing concerns” (p. 7).However, faculty have also indicated that their preference to address technical content infeedback is often put aside for addressing issues such as grammatical and syntactical errors thatwere interfering with reader comprehension of the text (Craig, 2005; Kranov, 2009). Distractedby sentence-level surface errors, professors often focus on correcting grammar instead ofcommenting on topics such as content and rhetorical issues

potentially serious penaltiesfor such behavior and viewpoints. A very public graphic example of this is the Google echochamber case, where an employee was dismissed due to expressing viewpoints that did not alignwith company values [5]. Professional engineering bodies are increasing the obligations onmembers to report breaches to their code of ethical conduct and making it more difficult formembers to avoid disciplinary processes, for example Engineering New Zealand changed theircode so that “engineers must take action if they observe something of concern” and they mustreport if they “suspect another engineer has significantly breached the code” [6]. Therefore, it isin the best interests of all parties to address disruptive and disrespectful behavior

[2]state that future engineering graduates need “to become highly innovative global‘problem solvers.’” Downey, et al. [3] present the required competencies for anengineer to be “globally competent.” Global learning may even impact thelifelong learning of graduates. As students become more aware of differences inclusters, even in engineering design, they realize their need to learn throughouttheir lives [4]. The definition of global learning is considered by some to be lessimportant than the implementation. According to Hedberg [5], there is a degree ofconsensus regarding the definition of global learning, but the problem is in regardto “how to attain

Expanding educational opportunitiesby developing online delivery of wind energy graduate courses is one strategy to address muchneeded diversity in the field. Building upon the literature of previous successful consortiumdevelopment, a new replicable model for setting up a consortium was created, called the Rapidmodel, with the name reflecting the goal to implement a new consortium within one year.Researchers conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of the model, through observingprogram meetings, interviewing faculty, staff and administrators engaged in the consortiumdevelopment work, and examining course sharing outcomes. However,in spite of the wealth of material available in engineering ethics texts and on the world-wideweb, challenges arise in several areas. Haws2 and Harris et al. 9 raise concerns aboutcontextualizing cases appropriately, providing a variety of cases, and ensuring cases havecharacters to whom the students can relate. We share these concerns, and we have tried toinclude more “mundane” cases (for example, whether to

Oral responses in some cases are replaced byweb response. Those issues are really needed to be taken into consideration in future lectures.Overall, the new instructional system is a great success. The result of this survey led to thedevelopment of interview questions for the third year. The CEE faculty made more
