educationalprocess more efficient without hindering learning or long-term knowledge retention.IntroductionThe purpose of this research was to determine if a correlation exists between computer use andknowledge retention.Computer use has become ubiquitous in all aspects of engineering education1. Students usespreadsheets to perform repetitive calculations or traffic simulation software to visualize anddesign an intersection. Students use electronic textbooks in lieu of printed volumes. Professorsuse courseware management systems to communicate effectively with their students. These areall examples of instructional technology.Glennan and Melmed classify instructional technology into three categories: tool-type, content-type, and instructional managment2. Tool

clearly emphasizeprofessional skills and ABET program outcomes (Criteria 3 d, f, g, h, i,). With shared goalsof providing undergraduates with a rich educational experience in which research, communication and critical thinking are central to achievement and to the development ofintegrity in engineering, such collaborations produce an instructional program that readiesstudents for the requirements of continuous learning and complex analysis essential to asuccessful, principled engineering career. This paper will describe the contributions toundergraduate engineering education that non-engineering faculty and academic departmentshave brought to the Pitt freshman engineering experience. Through the description of thecurricula and strategies developed

students select an appropriate major as indicated by a slight drop inthe students’ level of confidence regarding their selected major. The program was successful inbuilding a sense of community among the participants and staff.Table 7 summarizes the results of survey of students’ opinion of their knowledge and skillsneeded for college success. Statistically significant improvements in awareness of educationplanning, math anxiety, learning styles, financial aid and scholarships, and the MyMathTestsoftware were achieved. The most significant gain is on the use of MyMathTest software, andthis is no surprise considering that the focus of the program is on studying math using this tool. The measured increase in student awareness of the transfer process
