and practical approaches to foreign language acquisition. The Russian academictradition of a foreign language teaching, however, was basically aimed at reading andtranslation skills based on works of the leading European and American theoreticians. Themodern trend is communicative approach, the goal of which is to teach practical skills inlanguage application. In the 2011-12 academic year, Kazan National Research Technological University started aproject funded by the university of teaching English to faculty. Initially, 50 most activefaculty were selected and divided into five groups of ten according to the results of theirplacement tests. Each group met twice a week for four academic hours of English throughoutthe whole academic year. The

capability of students was exceptionally good and they were resourceful solvingdifficult engineering-research problems. For example, adverse health effects of hazardous airpollutants on workers in the Indian ship-breaking industry are difficult to quantify, assess andanalyze; students considered many options and ultimately developed new field and analyticaltechniques to solve such complex problems. However, many needed guidance in technicalwriting and in presentation, not unlike what is encountered at U.S. universities. Several writingprojects were initiated with IITB faculty and a close working relationship has developed betweenfaculty from the two universities. Asolekar et al.,3 represents one of the outcomes from thesabbatical experience, where

procedures on the teachers’ lexica using the 5.5 version of Dtm-Vic, a softwareprogram designed to perform analyses of multidimensional numerical and textual data. Derivedfrom innovations in linguistics, statistics, and computer science, lexicometry is relatively new tothe educational field. Lexicometric software programs such as Dtm-Vic afford an objectivewindow on a congregation of lexica, which is often referred to as a corpus, through “a panoply ofapproaches which seek to capture the different properties” of the textual data (Williams, 1999).Initially, the program is fed the corpus, which constitutes all the words of all the researchsubjects (in our case, the teachers), and proceeds to count the number of times every distinctword appears. covered within thetime frame of the course. Already some faculty members, who heard of the initiative, questionedthe possibility of invoking any material other than the original course material due to lack oftime.MethodologyThe main ingredient for effective storytelling are being relevant to the course material andaddressing the future profession of the students. This may not be easily applicable in allengineering courses. It is evident that the "Engineering Design" course is one of the bestopportunities for employing storytelling in the class, as it provides the atmosphere forbrainstorming, assessment, selection and implementation. This approach of introducing stories in the class was employed casually over the past years in thecourse.
