With 55% of engineering students being first-generation, andeven fewer having family members with careers in STEM fields, students’ ability to visualizelife as an engineer or computer scientist becomes more challenging. Non-cognitive factors suchas low self-efficacy may also play a role in students’ sense of belonging in college and in STEMmajors. Especially with the low state-wide K-12 ranking and the high percentage of first-generation students, these factors correlate with a need to support stronger study skills and studyhabits, including bridging gaps in K-12 learning and skills.
