Engineering Economy CoursesAuthor: Hamed SamandariAffiliation: University of Massachusetts DartmouthAbstractThe rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents both opportunities and challengesfor engineering education. As AI tools like ChatGPT become more accessible, studentsincreasingly use them to complete assignments, prompting educators to evaluate whether tointegrate AI as a learning aid or restrict its usage. This study explores the potential of AI toenhance student learning outcomes in an engineering economics course. Specifically, we utilizeChatGPT, which provides detailed explanations of economic theories, guidance onmicroeconomic principles, example problems, and real-world economic

= 1000, Annual net income = +4000, n = 8years?” This example is Option A in the actual homework assignment shown in Fig. 1.When these prompts are entered in ChatGPT at the time of creating the assignment (September2024), the response includes a cash flow summary for years 0 to 8 and ChatGPT responds: “InExcel: =IRR(A1:A9) where A1 to A9 contains the cash flows.”The third prompt in the provided example is “What is the actual value?” This should yield i* =2.1%. However, ChatGPT responds: “you should find that the IRR (rate of return) isapproximately 9.65%.” This response by AI gives the professor an opportunity to explain in theexample the concepts of hallucinations and misalignment, where AI produces content that isuntrue or factually inaccurate

has been heralded as an enticing opportunity to improve education, there are concernswith the ethical use of AI in education [6]. What are the academic implications of using an LLMto assess student assignments? Students are potentially penalized or punished if they use it intheir assignments. How would the instructor’s use of an LLM be different? Kumar [6] discussesthis dilemma as to what is right and good. They list quick feedback that is of high qualityprovided at a reasonable cost and convenience as good but predicates these benefits with the AI’suse as being right or wrong. There are also questions on how student information is processed in an LLM. Though servicessuch as ChatGPT have a large number of users, if an assignment is loaded for

material. Upon further investigation, it was determined thatwhen asking ChatGPT some specific questions, the responses are also very similar to thatmaterial, suggesting its use of the publisher’s material in its training, and perhaps use of eitherthe materials directly or of ChatGPT by the student development team. In any case, the materialdevelopment phase of the project ended in September, four months before this discovery (inFebruary 2024) so the student development team was unable to support in any corrections thatwere required. The instructor then rewrote and/or restructured many slides prior to use, to ensurethe was no question of copyright infringement. The debugging process proceeded seamlessly, with students in the course finding 29typos

disciplines[15]. However, the growing influence of generative AI tools like ChatGPT has also raised concernsregarding academic integrity and appropriate use, particularly among younger learners [16].Rather than viewing AI solely as a threat to traditional education models, recent efforts advocate for itsresponsible integration to enrich learning environments [11]. Strategies such as developing custom AIchatbots aligned with educational objectives offer pathways to maintain academic rigor while leveragingthe strengths of AI technologies [17]. At the forefront of this movement, work presented at the AmericanSociety for Engineering Education (ASEE) has demonstrated the effective use of custom generative AIchatbots as course resources [18], [19
