have proven to be especially beneficial intechnical fields, such as engineering. Interactive tools assist students in learning fundamentalconcepts using hands-on experience. This experience can help students visualize how theseconcepts are applied to real world challenges. One of the primary benefits of interactive tools isthat they provide instant feedback to the user. In engineering, these tools can be used toencourage students to problem solve, experiment, realize, and reflect on difficult concepts. Suchan experience enables students to apply their conceptual knowledge to real world difficulties on asmaller scale. This application can help them understand how variables, seen in calculation, caninfluence a problem. This experience also

analytical thinking pervades engineering design activities, the integration of the performance of components and sub-systems is vital to the success of allbut the simplest design problems. Consequently, the role of systems thinking is vital in solvingcomplex engineering design challenges while simultaneously considering environmental issues, safety, ethical implications, and economic factors [11]. Systems thinking permits students “tobreak out of the narrow definition of a problem and reflect on the relevant systems and how theyaffect, and in turn are affected by, new and improved technologies” [12]. By integrating systemsthinking experiences into early engineering design challenges, students may become moreexcited about engineering, while learning

Often in the past, studentswould seek out either Career Services staff or engineering faculty for informal resume critiques, but this exercise forced them to go through the process of seeking input from both, resulting inenhanced quality of the resumes created. In the first few weeks of class, students also identified and reflected upon their career goals forthe next year, the next five years, and beyond. The class discussed salaries to be expected, potential job options, possible benefits, opportunities for advancement, and lifelong learning.Students and faculty also spent time as a group discussing how to

The feedback was verypositive, with most students being satisfied with the course content, course management, andoverall online course experience. Some of the students’ feedback reflected their appreciation forthe flexibility of the course, specifically that that they were able to review the material severaltimes and learn on their own time, at their own pace, and at a place convenient for them.Students also appreciated that they could do the real lab experiments instead of virtual labs, andmany students said they liked the video demonstrations. On the negative side, some studentscomplained about the training modules freezing at times and suggested that

The first few times a team produces the weeklyreport presents challenges to the teams as this is their introduction to Gantt charts and weeklyreports. After two or three weeks of practice producing the charts and incorporating constructivefeedback, the student teams produce the charts within ten to fifteen minutes. More importantly, the teams begin to use the charts to plan and manage their projects. The Gantt chart presented inFigure 2 is a high-level chart prepared early in the project by a student team. A few students will consistently put minimal effortinto their course work and their sketches will usually be poor, reflecting their poor attitude Page 14.717.14toward their studies. The author also believes that providing examples of good (and maybe bad)sketches helps students understand assignment requirements and instructor expectations. Conclusions and RecommendationsFor many practicing civil engineers, hand-drawn sketches are still an important part of theengineering analysis and

Linux-based security tools are freely available in the Internet and they can be easily installed in many of the Linux distributions. So, there is a minimal cost in terms of software related items. With the tools-oriented labs, students have a chance to learn how theoretical lecture topics (e.g., asymmetric encryption, digital signatures, etc) are reflected and utilized in real world applications. Students have a chance to configure certain files in order to accomplish some of the tasks required in the labs. This experiential learning

theeducational basis of PBL. The main supporters of the cognitive theories are Jean Piagetand Robert Gagne. The implementation of the PBL activities involves instructorguidance, reflection and motivation as well. Constructivism is an off chute fromcognitivism where theorists believe not all information is known and there isn’tnecessarily one truth to all questions. Constructivist philosophy believes knowledge isbased on experiences and one must construct their own meanings. John Dewey, born outof a progressive philosophy, believes in social constructivist psychology, because he isconcerned with the process rather than the end product of the curriculum (Dewey, 1916)4.Cognitive teaching involves problem solving, cooperative learning and discoverylearning

This is to allow for echoes being weakerfrom distant objects. The motion detector is capable of measuring objects as close as 0.15 m andas far away as 6 m. The short minimum target distance allows objects to get close to the detector;this reduces stray reflections. The MD has a pivoting head which helps the user aim the sensoraccurately. The MD also has a sensitivity switch which is located under the pivoting motiondetector head. The VI requires two

among university engineering faculty, practicing engineers, and the schools is necessary; it is important to demonstrate to youngpotential STEM professionals the relevance of STEM activities [6]. In addition to interactingwith practicing professionals, authentic experiential learning activities can promote STEMcareers. Experiential learning attempts to rectify what Kolb characterized as the “rejection” ofthe “real-world” by the educational establishment [7]. The key to experiential learning is thecreation of knowledge “through the transformation of experience” [7]. In this project, thisexperience will be the development of connected devices aimed at building automationapplications. This will allow students to experience, reflect, think, and act

First, theM2 approach places making in a context that is culturally and socially situated to the students’ ownexperience. Second, it exposes students to the facets of the production pipeline, leading them tothe potential to develop novel and useful products for society. Third, M2 creates a scenario thatplaces students in long-term production as Makers fully engaging in STEM. Altogether, thisapproach could give students a holistic view as to their developed making skills may be transferred. This reflects Grovetants’ identity formation specifically as to how the M2 holds implications onteamwork, leadership, critical

is well worth the effort. Conclusions, Reflections, and the FutureWhat instructional planning method is best? The answer is perhaps different for each instructoras a method is selected somewhere along the path of becoming educators. These methods arechosen based on pedagogical methodologies learned or methods used that work in the givenmoment. Most of the educators in engineering programs are required to have higher-leveltechnical-based degrees, but are not necessarily required to have an advanced educational-baseddegree. Are there better instructional planning methods to balancing student and instructorworkload? Can they improve the outcomes for students and instructors? Are the methodspresented in this paper the only possibility? In reality

reasons: The RF signal power attenuation is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the transmitter and the receiver. The UHF RF signal can be reflected off nearby metal surfaces and concrete walls, which are common in a hospital environment, and cancel the incident signal if it is in anti-phase with incident signal. The reader’s antenna radiation patterns may also vary in different directions depending on the location and geometry of the room, which consequently influence the reader’s performance. Therefore, it is of great importance to adapt the reader’s antenna location to properly scan its environment and provide maximum tag detection capability. Most important is that the UHF RF signals are easily absorbed
