Examples of the NSFprograms taking root in this area include the basic STEM learning strategies, the Scholarships inScience, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM), and the STEM -TalentExpansion Programs (STEP). State Departments of Education are also providing grants forSTEM initiatives. The Ohio Department of Education, for example, awarded several grantstowards this cause recently. Constructs are formed from multiple questions infour areas of interest, math, science, engineering and technology and 21st Century Skills. Allattitudes tests are paired sample t-tests from pre and post measures of individuals.ElementaryThe S-STEM assessment created by the MISO project3 has four sections, math, science,Engineering/Tech, 21st century skills. Two of Beth’s current projects are an NSF sponsored S-STEM grant and the project described in this paper.Mary Virnoche, Humboldt State University Mary Virnoche is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Humboldt State University. Mary collaborates with colleagues in STEM areas to increase interest and diversity in those fields. She is currently working with a team on an NSF S-STEM project. In recent past her action research focused on the Expanding Your Horizons conference designed to generate and retain girls' interest in science and engineering. Mary completed her doctoral work at
