by Benderly3 discussed career paths of engineers andprovided information on a workshop titled Pathways for Engineering Talent. According toBenderly3, participants repeatedly stated that engineering education too often fails to provide allneeded skills to prosper in the workforce (especially the so-called professional or soft skills suchas communication and collaboration).2.0 Materials Laboratory LayoutThe layout of MSU’s CE 3311 laboratory has several parallels to that described by Hall4. Theprimary educational outcome for materials students is to produce a bachelor’s graduate that iswell grounded in fundamental concepts, and the CE 3311 laboratory is a key component of thatoutcome. The laboratory is modeled more after a professional
as having not only the technical skills, but thecommunication, teamwork, leadership, innovation and initiative. Jonassen and Strobel (2006)commented how practicing engineers are employed and rewarded for solving problems andwonder why we do not teach students in the same fashion. One such way of exposing students toproblem solving and problem solving skills was through problem-based learning. Problem-basedlearning programs use integrated and interdisciplinary problems that involve a high degree ofcollaboration. Hasna (2008) discussed how using problem-based learning in engineering designcourses allowed students to be more independent learners. Hasna further explains that problem-based learning helps with students learning the “soft skills
results in the last week of thesemester. While the last week is a relatively busy week, the students didn’t have enough time toprepare. Moreover, there was not enough time to give students feedback on their presentationskills. This can be improved next time by assigning the project early and allow more time for thepresentation preparation. If possible, two presentations can be assigned for the project and studentscan use the feedback on their first presentation to prepare for their second presentation. Technicalwriting and presentation are crucial soft skills that undergraduate engineering students areexpected to learn. Despite the relatively low rating, the project activities still helped the studentsimprove their writing and presentation skills
