evaluations are a very standard part of monitoring the efficacy of university instructorsand provide instructors with valuable feedback for improving their own performance and theexperience of students.1 The instruments to evaluate standard academic courses, however welldesigned and validated they may be for that task, do not typically serve well to evaluate how theadvisors of senior design (capstone) project teams perform their duties. Yet the same courseevaluation instrument is often applied to capstone project advisors by default, since capstone istypically listed and registered as an academic course. The idea of the modern capstone project largely emerged in the 1980’s, rapidly accelerating inadoption through the end of the millennium and reaching

original.Machine Shop TrainingTo complete their manufacturing projects, students will need to be trained on the rules ofworking in a machine shop, general safety precautions, and how to use tools important to theunderstanding of machining including band saws, files, taps, drill presses, calipers, and vices.Familiarity with the machine shop should be a prerequisite before lessons on manufacturabilitycan happen because, too frequently, students enter their senior capstone project clueless when itcomes to recognizing even many basic fabrication tools. Additionally, expectations for safebehavior, PPE, and supervision should be instilled early to maintain the integrity of working in aroom full of hazards that could potentially maim or injure. potential for the capstone projects by reducing machining waste. This paper’s purposes are to 1) provide the necessary background information to fullyunderstand the key elements of metal casting in an engineering Capstone course and 2) documenthow the availability of in-house sand casting impacts students’ design thought process andenjoyment of the course. These goals provide direction for future capstone project curriculumdevelopment to exploit the potential of sand casting for prototyping purposes while remainingunder safe working conditions in the lab. This process can also lead to a significant cost reductionin the capstone project development and raw material purchase, as metal waste from subtractivemanufacturing processes can be

Because the capstoneexperience is the part of the curriculum that best approximates professional practice, studentoutcome (SO) attainment in that course is particularly relevant to assessing the quality of theoverall degree program. Moreover, a team design project is a natural opportunity for assessingnumerous engineering skills, especially in design and teamwork. In the Mechanical Engineering (ME) program at King’s College (Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania), allseven ABET Student Outcomes are assessed in capstone design because our capstone course isintended to give students experience synthesizing the major engineering abilities for in anauthentic context. This, too, is an example of a subject-specific design project.A second type of design project is the comprehensive design project, which typicallyencompasses multiple subjects. Capstone design projects [11–14] fall into this category, as theyrequire students to apply all the knowledge they have gained in their education to successfullycomplete their designs. Other examples of comprehensive design projects includemultidisciplinary design projects[17], industry-sponsored design projects[18], and competition-based design projects[19] undertaken during the junior and senior years. It is crucial to achieving uniform flow because this condition occurs most oftenin realistic aerodynamic applications. After the test section, the air exits into the diffuser andthrough the fan to the right. As a Senior Capstone project for the mechanical engineering program in 2021, a team offive undergraduate students worked with a faculty advisor to utilize the wind tunnel. Theydeveloped a data acquisition system to experimentally determine the aerodynamic properties ofthe lift and drag force of objects in external flow [1], [2]. material is most frequently seen in a senior capstone course. This leads to the use of paper-only design projects. While less exciting these projects are usefulfor focusing on only the material of interest in specific classes. This focused learning allowsinstructors to assess the student learning and application of only the material taught in the currentclass, and not their ability to combine the knowledge of material they have learned in multipleclasses. This single class focused assessment is a necessity of the formative assessment of theABET program objectives [2] that all engineering programs must meet. All mechanicalengineering students are required to take some form of thermodynamics, either a one semestercourse or a two semester series

The Exo-Arm capstone project seeks to demonstrate the potential of Electromyography(EMG) based orthotic devices for strength enhancement and rehabilitation. For this capstoneproject an EMG based exoskeleton arm was designed and fabricated. This device is designed tobe attached to a user's arm and respond directly to the signal from the user's muscles. Once a userflexes their biceps, the skin electrodes detect the change in voltage and the EMG signal is sent toan Arduino nano. The Arduino microcontroller takes this
