Additionally authentic, situatedenvironments are believed to benefit student learning. Studies of feedback in situated projectsare uncommon and needed. This study proposes the use of episodes as a discourse analysisframework to investigate feedback in an industrially situated virtual laboratory project. Whileepisodes have been used in other disciplines, they present a new framework for engineeringeducation research.This paper focuses on a case study of feedback provided to four teams of students as part of anopen-ended senior project. Estell is Chair of the Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Department, and Professor of Computer Engineering and Computer Science, at Ohio Northern University. He received his doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His areas of research include simplifying the outcomes assessment process, first-year engineering instruction, and the pedagogical aspects of writing computer games.
