Not only wasthe style of exposition distinctly different from today’s textbooks, but these texts effectivelyblended analytical and graphical techniques for solving engineering problems. learning (PBL) is typically part of any given instructional blend.However, one can also use immersive, hands-on design-build activities to implicitly deliverknowledge of the engineering design process 2.We sought to answer two questions: (a) can a course that immerses students in iterative physicalconstruction of student designed devices, rather than classroom activities, improve knowledge ofthe engineering design process, and (b) does a learning environment that also emphasizesacademic advising further bolster this knowledge? The corresponding passingrates for Calculus II are 84.2% and 66.7%, respectively. In addition, the percentage of studentswho earned grades of A or B for those involved in the project compared to those who are not are46.4% and 35.0%, respectively in Calculus I and 57.3% and 38.7%, respectively in Calculus II.Adjustments continue to be made to achieve the project goals. Furthermore, as the projectactivities required significant coordination among different campus offices and academicdepartments, changes are made in processes to facilitate collaboration. The project
