decreasing and the emphasis on research and journalpublications for tenure and promotion is increasing. At MSU Mankato state and industry supporthas come together with faculty interest for the past several years in the areas of automationengineering and manufacturing. Courses in industrial automation involving PLC’s, sensors, andactuators have been taught since 2006 using hands-on active learning techniques. An effort isunderway to increase the technical depth and broaden the training by exploring deterministictiming and modeling in complex real-time automation systems using traditional PLC and PC-based PLC equipment and future, large multicore computer designs.1. IntroductionIn Spring 2006, a laboratory and courses were first created for training

Paper ID #35681Threat Vector Analysis - Finding Fault in the PileMr. Caleb Ian-Watson Beckwith, CUNY New York City College of Technology I am a Senior in mechanical engineering at the New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn New York. Over the past three years, I have worked with my school and several others both inside and outside of the US in order to research and learn more about Additive Manufacturing and how it is incorporated with the engineering supply chain and design process. This includes working with NYU over the summer as part of their NSF IRES summer research program with students from India to learn how

Development of Laboratory Component for Advanced Construction Materials course Rajarajan Subramanian Pennsylvania State University at HarrisburgAbstractLaboratory component is a very important module of any materials course in Civil Engineeringcurriculum. Construction Materials include Portland Cement Concrete, Asphalt Cement Concrete, Metals, and Wood. At the junior class level, most of the Universities in the United States have a laboratorycomponent for Portland Cement Concrete. However, for the senior level advanced materials course, thereis no laboratory component included in the curriculum. The advanced

Automation) core unit, studentsdeveloped a robotic testing setup to provide credentialed inputs and capture outputs for twomodels of locks. Mechanically, the system will accommodate 4 locks, two each of the NDE™and LE™ locks, with the potential to scale to other Allegion products as needed. In Phase I ofthe project, students met with Allegion to identify their needs. These needs were translated intoengineering requirements, from which three design alternatives were generated in Phase II. InPhase III students began to prototype the automatic lock testing system, and run preliminary testsfor functionality. In the final phase, Phase IV, final tests were conducted to validate the designbefore sending to the client for use. In addition to the physical

current fragility of the food systems in small island nations, there must be local, sustainable food production occurring on these islands. Implementing sustainable agriculturaltechniques which can withstand the weather events and support the local population are imperative tothe feasibility of these projects. Large scale greenhouse agriculture, hydroponic technology and othersustainable food production techniques within these communities can help subsidize food imports butalso ensure that the country is able to be self-sufficient in the event on a natural disaster which preventsimmediate food relief. In the next 30 years, smaller countries must be able to feed themselves and sustain their localpopulations. tuition assistance, this program had various components that assured every scholar hadthe adequate academic support and professional development opportunities to succeed in their fieldof study. Data that reflects the impact of this program on student success in STEM fields at UNMwill be revisited through this presentation. Although the program ended nationwide in September2007, NTP at UNM left a great legacy among students, faculty and staff at UNM. Many studentshave gone on to professions with private industry, state and federal agencies. Pollard Electrical and Computer Engineering University of New Mexico AbstractField Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) provide an excellent mechanism for schools from thehigh school level through graduate level to teach concepts of digital logic in a hands-onenvironment. FPGAs are “chameleon chips” that are also critical components in state-of-the-artsystems from spacecraft to handheld devices to network routers. To master them, students
