projects are proceeding relativelywell by working around many of these issues. Some changes are being considered for the nextround of projects based on the lessons learned from the experiences executing the program for thefirst time. Details of the changes to the program to make the projects run more smoothly will bepresented at a future conference.References[1] P. Singh, S. Kulkarni, E. Keech, R. McDermott-Levy, and J. IntroductionIn engineering colleges during the 1950’s, a student had to become acquainted with all kinds ofvisual constructs that were needed to solve problems of design. Oscilloscopes displayed voltagetime signals; spectrum analyzers displayed signal Fourier components and curve tracersdisplayed diode and transistor characteristics. In addition, students contemplated such wonderfulmathematical inventions as shear-moment diagrams for structural beam analysis, Mollierdiagrams of steam tables, root locus and Nyquist diagrams for feedback control systems. Itseemed engineers visualized everything. Graphs

Various biomass includingnewsprint, agriculture byproducts such as corn stover are being studied as feed in a bioreactorwith nutrients in form of salts for their growth. engineering principles. The Engineering ABC Book Project was introduced and assigned at the beginning of thesemester. Through classroom activities and short lectures, students were provided withbackground information about the field of engineering. Students were first asked to thinkabout a field of engineering and then choose a grade level. The preservice teachers thenexamined the curriculum for their target grade level(s) to see how their work would fitwhat students at that particular age were learning in the classroom. The preserviceteachers formed their own groups according to the particular field of engineering thatthey wanted to research.Students spent the first month of the Toying With TechnologySM course researching thefield of engineering that

cycles and more sophisticatedinstruction sets. While this capability is also available in variants of the SMC [4], thespreadsheet-based simulation usually requires less support overhead since thespreadsheet software is already available to most students. Potential Improvements The following improvements would expand the range of programs the students couldexperiment with: 1. Conditional control flow – there need to be one or more instructions that use the results of calculations to alter the program’s control flow. The TX-0’s Jump instruction was actually a conditional instruction that only jumped if the accumulator contained a negative number. That is one way to do it. 2. Input/output – students

Furthermore, the impact andeffectiveness of USB tablets in classrooms needs to be evaluated using a control group that usesthe traditional teaching techniques and an experimental group that uses tablet technology.References[1] Biswas, S., “Teaching Courses with Tablet PC: Experiences and Student Feedback”, Proceedings of the American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference, June 2007, Honolulu, HI.[2] Mathews C.P. and Khoie, R., “Assessing the effectiveness of Tablet PC-based instruction

learn by experiencing. His observation for education is that the system inexistence at the time of his work is based on an important fallacy. This is that the experiencesdesigned by adults – and particularly to be credible to adults – to teach children were failing.Further, they were failing because these experiences assumed that the child’s experience would bethe same as the adult’s experience. As one might assume, this is a liberating idea for professional educators. Of course likemany liberating ideas, the liberation soon began to resemble anarchy. To get an idea of how thismight have looked in the 1920’s, one can view the play or movie Auntie Mame. The title characteris left to raise her nephew and chooses several avante garde

During my lessonplanning prior to class, I strategically outline in my mind which problems I will personallyreview in class on the board and which problem(s) I will have the students attempt on their ownduring the lesson period in class. These skills were originally introduced in capstone design courses. Some skills are now introduced in a sophomore level engineering design course and a freshmancourse. This paper introduces the issues and our approaches.1. IntroductionThe current generation of college students, who were born in 1990’s, grew up with personalcomputers, the Internet, and other digital “gadgets”. They use text messages, IM (instantmessage), e-mail, and cell phones to communicate with their peers every day. They also sharetheir lives by posting messages and uploading digital photos to social
