Abstract

Many educators are hesitant to integrate tools like ChatGPT into the classroom due to concerns about plagiarism and copying. However, this is not always the case for design classes, where assessments typically involve creating reports or generating numerical data, tasks that can be easily verified. In the context of mechanical design, the focus is on producing a feasible design plan and often a functional prototype, tasks that require creativity and problem-solving rather than simple replication. While many students show strong interest in mechanical design, they often struggle to acquire the necessary knowledge to achieve their design goals. The advanced capabilities of artificial intelligence, such as organizing ideas and generating concepts, can help overcome these challenges, especially during the conceptual phase. Additionally, AI features like grammar correction and time management support can aid in project management. This study presents a comparison between two approaches to a horse clamp design project. One proposal follows the traditional design process, including defining requirements, conducting research and literature reviews, generating concepts, selecting solutions, developing designs, prototyping, and testing. The other proposal incorporates the use of ChatGPT at various stages of the design process. Different prompts will be applied at each step, and their impact on the process will be recorded and compared.The full paper will provide a detailed comparison of the two approaches, evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of incorporating ChatGPT into mechanical design education.
