Dr. Lionel Hewavitharana is a Professor of Engineering, and the Instructor of Capstone Design in the Department of Engineering and Physics at Southern Arkansas University.
Dr. Mahbub Ahmed is an associate professor of engineering at Southern Arkansas University. He completed his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering with an emphasis in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas (El Paso) in 2008. He earned his Ba
Capstone Design is a critical course in Bachelor of Science (BS) engineering degree programs. Since the introduction of the course in 1980 s, it has become an integral part of engineering programs not only in the United States(US) but also in foreign nations. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) places a heavy emphasis on Capstone Design experience in its program evaluation because this course helps students transfer from school to industry environment smoothly. In this course, the students use knowledge from previous courses, supplement it with new learnings through self studies plus applications, and produce design solutions to industry level problems observing engineering and regulatory standards. This paper discusses the Capstone Design model used at Southern Arkansas University with reference to its implementation and relevance to ABET accreditation process so as to share our experience with the academic community.
