Dr. George Ford P.E. is on the faculty of Mississippi State’s Building Construction Science Department. He holds an Ed D from Western Carolina University, NC; a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of South Carolina; and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Clemson University, SC. Dr. Ford has 15 years of industrial experience including corporate work, and 21 years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level.

The Building Construction Science (BCS) program at XXXXXX is a studio-based program which includes a 12 contact hours course in each of the eight semesters of the program. Course learning objectives are assessed in these studios through traditional graded written assignments and tests, and through face to face critique sessions in which students explain the details of their in-progress assignments and projects verbally, prior to submitting their written work. During critiques, student explain their designs or thought rationale in verbal presentations which often include Microsoft Office type files with substantially completed draft summaries of their work used to outline their work. When students present a project, their peer students are present, and they learn from each other. Students practice their presentation skills. Instructors weight the student critiques and presentations in the assignment and project grades which reduces grading loads after hours. While studio-based courses can be expensive and time consuming, learning outcomes can be taught with a depth not typically seen in a lecture only type course. In-class critiques in these studios provide additional depth of learning beyond typical lecture lab type courses. This paper will provide a detailed description of studio course based operational characteristics, and the advantages and disadvantages of in-class student critiques to enhance mastery student learning outcomes and student presentation skills.
