Abstract

Cyber Based Layer Manufacturing with an On-line Testing System Tzu-Liang Bill Tseng, Richard Chiou, Paras MandalThe objective of this paper is to introduce, implement, and further enhance engineeringeducation in cyber-based layer manufacturing using an on-line testing system within theestablished programs of Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering and MechanicalEngineering at the University of Texas at El Paso. This paper describes a state-of-the-art virtualrapid prototyping simulator in 3D environment and an on-line testing system. The purpose of thevirtual RP simulator is allowing the users to learn how to operate the Fused Deposition Modeling(FDM) 3000 machine in a virtual environment while the goal of the on-line testing system is toenhance student learning and hand-on skills when the instructor is not available. The paper alsoaims at developing an effective learning model to facilitate student’s learning in layermanufacturing. Student learning from both real and virtual environment and with and without thesupport from the on-line testing system are evaluated and discussed in this paper.
