Abstract

Title- Decision time: the optional team track for technical entrepreneurship graduate students Abstract- One aspect of developing humanitarian engineers is appreciating the value of an interdisciplinary team. Many of us have defaulted to the practice of ‘assigning’ students to prescribed teams. However, there is an alternate pedagogical approach. Giving students the opportunity to come to their own decision that they would like to join a team for a course project has tremendous value. Students given the autonomy to choose their path have to weigh the risks and benefits of collaborating with others. When they decide to move forward on the team path, they must learn how to evaluate the skill sets of numerous classmates and then develop the rationale for a certain group to come together. Over the past few years graduate students in a technical entrepreneurship engineering program have been afforded the opportunity to complete their project work as an individual, or in a team of two or three. This decision to ‘hop on’ the team track can be made at any time during the fall or spring semester, simulating the real life decision engineers have to make. Does a team need to be formed? If so, when should the team come together…and what is the size of the team? Who is on the team? Do the team members share project goals and motivation? The early observations suggest that the process of ‘outsourcing’ the decisions of ‘if and how’ to form an engineering team provides students with experiential learning lessons that will translate to their post-graduate careers.
