I am the President of the Engineering Student Guild and a dual-degree student in Physics and Engineering at the University of North Georgia. With a strong academic foundation in both the theoretical principles of physics and the practical applications of engineering, I am dedicated to advancing the field of environmental engineering, particularly in water filtration systems. Passionate about bridging classroom learning with real-world problem-solving, I am committed to providing hands-on learning experiences that enhance engineering education. As a student leader, I actively promote collaborative initiatives that empower my peers to engage in meaningful projects, fostering a deeper understanding of engineering principles and their impact on society.

Abstract

Integration of hands-on activities and design projects into engineering course have been shown to significantly enhance and deepen understanding of concepts. Teamwork, group interaction, and communication skills are crucial components of learning. Engineering Student Guild (E.S.G) is a student-led organization at the University of North Georgia at Gainesville whose mission is to provide design and project opportunities, hands-on experience, and a network to engineering students. E.S.G offers a range of opportunities for students to develop and deepen their knowledge of engineering, regardless of their prior experience. To achieve its mission, E.S.G hosts semesterly competitions where students develop and implement engineering projects. Through these competitions, students expand their skills, knowledge, and experience.

E.S.G hosted Endurance Vessel Boat and Bridge Building Competitions in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024, respectively. Five to eight teams participated in these competitions. The teams were required to design, build, and test the functionality of their projects. With each competition, there was a given ruleset and specified amount of materials to be used. For the bridge building competition teams had to design and construct a bridge that will support the greatest weight possible per gram of material used in construction. For the Endurance Vessel Boat competition, teams had to design, and 3D print their boat. 3D printing technology is an effective tool to allow students to physically see the changes they make to a design concept. Beyond testing the projects built, students used trial and error to further improve their initial designs. At the conclusion of the contest, awards were given out for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

Students’ skills and knowledge in physics, engineering, and design software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks were advanced to develop an efficient boat and bridge. Students learned how to work in a team where everyone has different skills and knowledge.
