Abstract

EDGE DETECTORS IN ENGINEERING AND MEDICAL APPLICATIONSAbstract Image edge detection is an integral component of image processing to enhancethe clarity of edges and the type of edges. My previous paper15 began to discuss theissues regarding edge techniques. This paper provides a deeper analysis regarding imageedge detection using matrices, partial derivatives, convolutions and the software’s,MATLAB 7.9.0 and the MATLAB Image Processing Toolbox 6.4. Edge detection hasapplications in all areas of research such as engineering and medicine. The Engineeringapplication is to apply an image obtained by various software techniques and try to applyedge detection to the image and observe any cracking, breaking or delamination foundinternally or externally to the inspected structure. In the field of medicine a patient canbe diagnosed with an aneurysm, by studying an angiogram. An angiogram is the visualview of the blood vessels and illustrated in Figure 1 (Vascular Web image). The previouspaper 15 studied alphabets using vertical, horizontal and Sobel transforms. This paperwill study images to include the alphabet O and three images, an I beam and the image ofCameraman and Rice included in the Image Processing Toolbox 6.4. We then comparethe techniques implemented in the previous paper15 and the images, alphabet O, I Beam,Cameraman and Rice using vertical, horizontal, Sobel, and Canny transformsimplementing the software’s MATLAB 7.9.0 and the Image Processing Toolbox 6.4.
