Dr. John Schmeelk is a Professor of mathematics at Virginia Commonwealth University teaching mathematics at VCU campus in Doha, Qatar. He received his Ph.D. from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He has been an invited speaker to conferences in Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Hungary, India, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and many other lands.
Edge Detectors in Image Processing John Schmeelk Virginia Commonwealth University/Qatar Doha, QatarAbstract Image edge detection is an integral component of image processing to enhance theclarity of edges and the type of edges. A previous paper15 began to discuss the issues regardingedge techniques. A brief summary of the mathematics included in the previous paper will beincluded in the paper. This paper provides a deeper analysis regarding image edge detectionusing matrices, partial derivatives, convolutions and the software’s, MATLAB 7.9.0 and theMATLAB Image Processing Toolbox 6.4. The previous paper 15 studied alphabets usingvertical, horizontal and Sobel transforms. This paper will study images to include the alphabet Oand two images, Cameraman and Rice included in the Image Processing Toolbox 6.4. We thencompare the techniques implemented in the previous paper15 and the images, alphabet O,Cameraman and Rice using vertical, horizontal, Sobel, and Canny transforms implementing thesoftware’s MATLAB 7.9.0 and the Image Processing Toolbox 6.4. The softwareimplementation in this presentation should be of interest to engineering students using MATLABproducts.
