Abstract

First year students at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford are introduced to MatLab in the second semester. Using the ability of this powerful language in design courses in any of their Engineering concentrations, can give the student a better understanding of each course. In their sophomore year, when students will have the first introduction to their respective Engineering disciplines, MatLab can play an important part in their success. This presentation selects design in the electronics area and how MatLab can be usedl to simplify calculations and to verify calculator results. From simple diode designs and waveform presentations to MOSFET and BJT operating point calculations, the Matlab program can be very helpful to make sure that the data is correct and that the student understands design procedures. Changes in Q point can be quickly obtained and can lead to optimum designs. Amplifier designs can also be obtained very easily and can be modified at will.
