Samuel Servati, a dedicated student-athlete at SUNY Canton pursuing a bachelor's in mechanical engineering, is deeply passionate about mechanical design and machinery manufacturing. As founder and chairman of the SME chapter, inspired by his internship as a diesel mechanic, he aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice in engineering education. Through SME, Samuel fosters a supportive environment for hands-on learning, ensuring that SUNY Canton's future engineers are well-prepared and proficient in their craft while building a strong community of collaboration and innovation within the engineering programs.

Abstract

First-year engineering students face many challenges, such as academic pressures, a lack of time management skills, and a need for community. This paper explores the first-year experience in engineering colleges, emphasizing the importance of supportive environments for informed career decisions among students. It addresses challenges in retention, social integration, teaching methods, and mentoring programs, highlighting their significant impact on student success and retention in STEM fields. It is necessary to address factors influencing student’s decisions to persist or depart from their chosen major. Establishing a solid social community among peers is central to the first-year experience, fostering a sense of belonging within the program. Additionally, the adjustment process to college teaching methods is discussed, with mentoring programs that offer support and guidance to first-year students. How are universities combating the issues faced by students? These questions will be answered from the students' perspective and through the experience of the professors and even the SUNY Cantons engineering department collegiate athletes. Challenges and opportunities mark the first year of experience in engineering college by fostering supportive environments, implementing effective teaching strategies, and providing targeted mentorship. Institutions can empower students to navigate the complexities of higher education and pursue successful pathways within STEM disciplines and give the education community a lookout that will allow us to build a better support system for the success of first-year engineering students and continue to implement the current strategies that fulfill the needs of students on this bewildering journey of their academic endeavors.
