Abstract: This initiative transforms STEM education by engaging 6–12 grade students in the Texas Panhandle with hands-on tools focused on groundwater, aquifers, water quality, and water quantity. Teachers collaborate directly with the program to implement in-class activities, organize science and educational camps, and use a dedicated water education website to enhance student learning and problem-solving skills.
Students explore groundwater's critical role in sustaining ecosystems, agriculture, and community life. Activities cover aquifer recharge processes, both natural and artificial, addressing the growing demand for water resources. Lessons on water height measurement demonstrate its applications in flood management, irrigation, and hydropower, helping students understand water dynamics and how material properties influence displacement. Experiments on capillary action illustrate water transport in plants and soil, linking environmental processes to real-world applications in agriculture and medical diagnostics. These activities build observation, data analysis, and teamwork skills while highlighting the practical importance of water science in sustainable development.
The program organizes activities into short conceptual introductions, detailed experiment instructions, and observation sections where students record findings. Affordable and reusable materials ensure accessibility for teachers and students, creating opportunities for hands-on learning in diverse educational settings. A "train the trainer" model allows teachers to inspire hundreds of students, extending the program's impact across classrooms and camps.
This paper outlines the program's methods, outcomes, and impact on STEM education in the Texas Panhandle. The initiative develops students' analytical, teamwork, and problem-solving skills by integrating classroom instruction, experiential learning, and outreach. It equips students and teachers to address water resource challenges and inspires the next generation of scientists and innovators. The program connects education and environmental sustainability, empowering communities to build a more informed future.
