Chau Tran is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department at NC State University. He is currently the course coordinator for capstone senior design and previously was the course coordinator for Vibration, the director for undergraduate advising and the director for undergraduate laboratory. He teaches senior design and Vibration annually. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from NC State University in 1998.
This paper illustrates the implementation of the entrepreneurial mindset (EM) in an undergraduate Vibration class, and reveals the performance of the pertinent assignments. In Vibration classes, while nine or ten homework sets and one final examination are obligatory, the number of in-class test and experiment or project is flexible. Most classes have three in-class tests while a few have two in-class tests plus one project, and the project often resembles a prolonged take-home test. One particular Vibration class that uncommonly had two in-class tests and two projects utilized the entrepreneurial mindset learning (EML) in spring 2022. Two problem-based learning (PBL) design projects were imbedded with EML, a strategy aiming for the components forerunning the entrepreneurial action - curiosity, connections and value creation. The first project applies Single-Degree-of-Freedom system concept to the design of a suspension system for an airplane landing gear, and the second project applies Multiple-Degree-of-Freedom system concept to the design of a dynamic vibration absorber for a reciprocating engine. Both designs use frequency spectrum as the primary guidance. The performances of the two projects for spring 2022 class with EML, and for three spring classes without EML were investigated. Results from both projects clearly showed that the percentage of excellence was high in the class with EML.
