Abstract

Hands on Experience for students on an Energy Management SystemAs new energy technologies arise, they are being implemented in the Power Grid Nation Wideservices. We believe that it is very important to create an efficient way to manage the energyresources in our facilities. In the University of Texas – Pan American we have designed a system using the Graphical UserInterface of LabVIEW to gather Solar Power Data using a Measurement and Computing minilab1008 interface. This system gathers Solar Power Information from a 5 kW Fixed Photovoltaic Array. It has thecapability to retrieve real time prices of electricity for the southern region of Texas according toThe Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), and generate a report on the actual energyproduction revenue. In addition to this system, we have added a database where the power information is stored forthe purpose of generating a detailed report of the solar power data. This report includes Powerand Energy information generated by 2 isolated Photovoltaic 5 kW systems plus the SolarRadiation Measurements gathered using a specialized instrument. In this paper we introduce a set of experimental laboratory exercises for undergraduate studentsto become familiar with these practices of Renewable Solar Energy.
