Dr. Liyong Sun is an associate professor of engineering at Penn State Behrend. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota.

The thermodynamics course for Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) students at university A has been delivered by lectures only. This course focuses on properties, thermodynamics laws, power and refrigeration cycles. Thermodynamics is a course which is dry and abstract and difficult to understand. Rankine cycle analysis is generally treated as the most complex analysis in this course because it includes analysis of steady open systems, close systems and properties. Students should benefit a lot if a Rankine cycle lab is conducted. Currently university A does not have a Rankine cycle equipment on site. Thus, the Rankine cycler lab performed at university B is incorporate into this course. The lab manual is revised to fit this course. The remote lab is performed at week 3. Students in the lecture observe the experiment which is performed at university B by Zoom. Students start to work on the lab report after the open system analysis is covered in class and the lab report is due after the Rankine cycle analysis is covered. There are pre-lab survey and post-lab survey for students. This paper will present the lab instructions, lab report deliverable, and the results of students’ survey. Several common issues in the students’ lab report are also presented.
