Incorporating the Online Encyclopedia of Chemical Engineering Equipment Into Your Course ActivitiesStudents in chemical engineering courses often bemoan the lack of information about actualchemical engineering equipment in our curricula. To address this critical need in our curriculaour laboratory has devoted twenty years to the development of an online visual encyclopedia ofchemical engineering equipment, aimed at chemical engineering undergraduate students. Thisencyclopedia provides students with a basic understanding of what chemical engineeringequipment looks like and how it works. In our paper we describe the encyclopedia and presentways to incorporate the encyclopedia into core Chemical Engineering courses. The one hundred and one categories of chemical engineering equipment are organized into thenine sections: Flowmeters, Heat Transfer, Materials Handling, Process Parameters, Reactors,Chemical Separations, Mechanical Separations, Transport and Storage, and Polymer Processing. For each type of equipment within a category the Encyclopedia provides students withinformation in the following areas: General Information, Equipment Design, Usage Examples,Advantages / Disadvantages, and References. At the heart of the Encyclopedia are photographsof actual equipment, obtained from equipment manufacturers, diagrams and animations showinghow the equipment works, and pictures and descriptions of applications of the equipment in awide variety of areas. Many tools exist to enrich chemical engineering courses, but family with limited time hesitate totake the time to determine how best to integrate these tools into their courses. In this paper weprovide sample assignments, and suggestions to enrich existing assignments and course activities, that will lower the barrier to action. This will allow faculty to easily expose students to realchemical engineering equipment through the use of the Encyclopedia, enriching their educationalexperience and better preparing them to become Chemical Engineers.
