Jeffrey Lange graduated from Iron Range Engineering (IRE) in 2012 with his Bachelors of Science in Engineering with an emphasis in electrical engineering. He is currently working as a Project Mentor at IRE and passing on the knowledge and the love of the program that he developed as a student. Jeffrey completed his first two years of schooling at Anoka Ramsey Community College and then transferred to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He struggled in school until he found IRE and then excelled in his education. He is a big supporter of Project Based Learning in the Engineering field and wants to constantly improve the style and engineering education in general.
Faculty-proposed vs. industry-based design projectsAt the Iron Range Engineering program, students must enroll and complete four design coursesin their junior and senior years. In this program, the majority of design projects are proposed andsponsored by local industry. However, the faculty or occasionally students propose designprojects. Either faculty or industry proposed projects have their pros and cons. For example,industry-proposed projects are real-world practical problems which help students know and buildrelationship with industry. On the other hand, faculty-proposed projects can be good researchprojects which help students prepare for graduate schools. In this paper, we will provide ageneral comparison between these two types of projects. Additionally, we will discuss differentperspectives of these two types of design projects such as: 1- Students’ standpoints 2- Graduates who have experience with both types of projects 3- Faculty’s perspectivesThe data will be collected by conducting surveys and the responses from our graduates andsenior students, who had experience with both Faculty-proposed and industry-based designprojects, will be presented. We will also interview faculty who have proposed capstone designprojects at IRE program. This paper help faculty to decide how to allocate their resources ondeveloping connections with industry or developing good research projects for their students.
