Priya T. Goeser is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Southern University-Armstrong Campus, Savannah GA. She received her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware and her B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, India. Her current research interests are structural health monitoring, functionally graded materials and innovative teaching methods in engineering education.

Abstract

Current research on the effectiveness of publisher developed learning management and home-work systems shows positive results including the reinforcement of concepts from lectures, immediate feedback to students on their work, appropriate hints and guidance for problem solv-ing and the ability to meet diverse pedagogical needs. These systems are used in many courses to improve students’ understanding of fundamental concepts, student interest and student per-formance. The goal of this study is to evaluate the use of such a system – SolidProfessor in an Engineering Graphics course at ___ University.

SolidProfessor is an online resource with built-in video tutorials and lessons for engineering training with an emphasis on CAD courses. Instructors can use pre-built lesson plans, custom-ize lesson plans or create their own lesson plans. The lesson plans include a baseline test and a review test.

This work explores the effective use SolidProfessor to improve student learning. In addition to faculty and student experiences, specific learning outcomes are measured and correlated to stu-dent performance. It is predicted that such a correlation would be beneficial to the instructor to clearly and quickly identify key concepts that are difficult for students.
