XIA WANG (wang@oakland.edu) is an assistant professor in the department of MechanicalEngineering at Oakland University. Her research and teaching interests lie in the areas of fluidmechanics and heat transfer, with an emphasis on fuel cell technology. She is program director of the NSF IRES program at Oakland University.
Laila Guessous, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the department of mechanical engineering at Oakland University (OU) in Rochester, MI. Her research and teaching interests lie in
the areas of fluid mechanics and heat transfer, with an emphasis on computational methods. She is the program director for the NSF and DoD funded AERIM REU program at OU, as well as co-director of an NSF-funded International Research Experience for Students (IRES) collaborative research program with China on fluid and thermal transport in fuel cells.
Dr. Qian Zou is an Associate Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Oakland University.
Professor of Beijing Jiaotong University, School of Mechanical, Electronic, and Control Engineering
International Research Experience for Engineering Students in China in the area of Fuel CellsThe department of mechanical engineering at Oakland University was awarded by the NationalScience Foundation a grant entitled “International Research Experience for Students(IRES):Collaborative Research Activities with China on Fluid and Thermal Transport in Fuel Cells.”This is a three year program starting on Oct 1, 2009.The objective of the proposed IRES site is to annually provide five U.S. engineering students(four undergraduates and one graduate) with the unique opportunity to work on fuel cellcollaborative research between Oakland University (OU) and Beijing Jiaotong University(BJTU) in Beijing, China. In the past summer, a total of 6 students have taken part in the IRESprogram. These students stayed in Beijing Jiaotong University for 8 weeks and worked on threedifferent projects related to fuel cells. This paper will focus on the organization of this program including pre-departure preparation,on-site orientation, on-site activities and post-program assessment. Also, the lessons learnedfrom running this type of program will be summarized. Some suggestions to keep thesustainability of the program will be also provided.
