Abstract

In the wake of the COVID pandemic, institutions of higher education have reevaluated and reassessed how experimental and demonstration laboratories are delivered to the students. While many institutions transitioned from in-person experimental labs to virtual and remote platforms, many found it challenging to engage students in these new environments. While some have argued that access to remote and virtual learning environments can facilitate broadening participation in engineering, many educators observed areas of iniquity and disparity of resources among many students. This evidence-based practice project describes the observations and interviews from students participating in mechanical and aerospace engineering labs in the first and second years after the return from the pandemic. The observations center on examining the student-to-student, student-to-equipment, and student-to-instructor interactions and access to hands-on engagement with laboratory equipment and specialized software.
