Kaitlin is currently an Education Fellow with the Granta Education Division. She received her PhD at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign under Professor Paul Braun. Her research was split: focusing on manipulating eutectic material microstructures for optical applications and examining how engineering outreach programs influence participants' self-perceptions of engineering and self-confidence. Her interests lie in materials education and STEM outreach.
Learn Materials: Making an introductory, online materials resource
Work in Progress
This year, Granta plans to make a basic database of Materials, Processes and Products available online. The database, Learn Materials, which is open and free, has been designed with two educational purposes in mind: first as a resource for use in outreach activities in the K-12 space; and second as tool to support an Introduction to Materials course and encourage students to consider MS&E as choice of major. The planned database will include around 30 materials with 10 properties for each and with the ability to display the data in a visually engaging manner. It will be interactive and allow students to explore material properties in an easily accessible way. This paper outlines plans, database structures, content and associated resources for a website planned for release in June when a link to a prototype will be available to solicit feedback from the ASEE Materials community.
