This paper serves to provide a basic outline for an innovative new gamified program for learning human-spoken languages. This program is meant to supplement and aid the learning process for different languages by engaging the user in an interactive virtual escape-room game. At the core of this program is a translation API to process text and output the translated text in a target language. Provided is a basic proof of concept created as a partial fulfillment of our Final Pi Project in the Intermediate Computer Programming (COSC 1352) course. The gamified program was written using the Python programming language with a modular design which utilizes the Google Translate API to produce progressively translated sentences. The software is also lightweight, as it was written to run on Raspbian OS on the Raspberry Pi. This graphical adventure game interacts with the user via text commands and can be utilized by a wide variety of age groups. In its current implementation, it can handle translation of both full sentences and select words within a sentence depending on the "difficulty" scale that the learner has chosen to match their language proficiency. Due to the modularity of this program, future implementations such as speech recognition, AI generated responses, or web interfaces are possible. Even the translation API and its parameters can be changed to match the program. The results of the initial version of the game are very promising as it is very easy to scale and implement a fully interactive gamified human-spoken language learning program. Our current proof-of-concept demo version won the best technical award in the Final Pi Project Design Expo held by our engineering department based on reviews and evaluations from faculty, industry professionals and the department’s advisory board members. Future iterations of this program would focus on decreasing the translation time for API calls as well as adding audio-based input and output.
