Dr. Kari Lippert, D.Sc., has over 45 years’ experience as a Systems Engineer serving in various roles in a wide variety of both commercial and government positions. She is currently an Assistant Professor in Systems Engineering at the University of South Alabama. She is a non-typical systems engineer having started her academic career in the biological sciences. She then moved into theoretical chemistry and biochemical simulation, then big data and databases, then systems, then cyberspace defense and network security. Analysis, design, implementation, integration, testing, requirements management, change management, risk, architecture, and process improvement -- all the aspects of systems engineering in a wide variety of situations and working with a large variety of systems. Her current research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Digital Ecosystems, Digital Twins and Virtual Humans.

Abstract

The flipped classroom model, where students engage with basic class material outside of the classroom and come to class for discussion in an active learning environment, is an increasingly common form of content delivery in engineering programs. For graduate programs at the University of Z, where many students live and work remotely, the use of the flipped classroom helps to facilitate an environment that works for all students. In this work-in-progress analysis the authors will analyze the use of the flipped classroom in systems engineering graduate classes at the University of Z. Specifically, the researchers propose to examine the impact of a multi-instructor approach to the flipped classroom model. In the multi-instructor approach, one faculty member creates pre-recorded lecture videos which are uploaded to the learning management system (LMS) while a second faculty member performs weekly in-class instruction and support. Initial student reviews of classes taught with the flipped classroom model and multiple instructors has been positive. However, insufficient data has been collected to prove that multiple instructors can best deliver the flipped classroom model. In this study, the authors hope to determine the impact of multiple instructors on the flipped classroom model using a qualitative study of current systems engineering graduate students at the University of Z. The study will consist of a survey with a focus on: student-faculty communication, consistency of material delivery, and the impact on student comprehension on material.
