Abstract

Undergraduate research experience (URE) in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Technology (STEM) disciplines can fuel the interest and enthusiasm in STEM education and research, career, and pursuit of advanced degrees. This paper presents outcomes of the Industry-Research Inclusion in STEM Education (I-RISE) project that enrolled 115 STEM students in various STEM disciplines in a historically black college and university (HBCU) over a period of three years. The participants in this URE were either freshmen or sophomores with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of less than 3.0- populations highly susceptible to attrition in STEM. Overall, more than 95% of participants were Black or African Americans (B/AA) and over 60% were women. The outcome assessment indicates improved academic performance, greater attainment of summer internships, and increased interest for pursuing advanced degrees in STEM. The learned best practices exercised in the project will be presented.
