Heads Outcome Based Education division of the college. Is responsible for implementation and review of outcome based approach in programmes offered. Teaches engineering at the first degree level.
Dr. V. KOVAICHELVAN is the Director of TVS Institute for Quality and Leadership, the Corporate University of TVS Motor Company Limited, India. The Institute focus on holistic development of talent through career lifecycle with focus on functional & professional skills, cultural capabilities, collective capabilities, support business strategy and Corporate Social Responsibility.
Programmes and courses are designed, developed, deployed and evaluated in learning environments using various Instructional Design Models. Several instructional design models have been evolved over the years and each have their own merits and de-merits. Stage gate approach is a method used in new product development. Design, development, deployment and evaluation of programmes and the courses in programmes is analogous to new product development. The present work reviews several instructional design models, selects a model for implementation based on a decision matrix, analyzes stage gate approach and its applications, proposes a framework for programme and course design, development, deployment and evaluation using the stage gate approach integrated with the instructional design model. The most widely used ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) model is used in the study. The framework integrates ADDIE with the stages and gates of the stage gate approach. Activities, working team and deliverable that are part of the stages and decisions, gate keepers and criteria that are part of the gates are formulated for all the FIVE stages analogous to ADDIE. Checklists with rubrics are developed for the criteria and used during the gate reviews of stages. The work also presents the findings from using the framework for the design, development, deployment and evaluation of courses in bachelor of engineering programme with specialization in mechanical engineering in India. The work presents the quality improvements in the course contents, delivery methods, assessments and student performance. The work also presents the difficulties that was encountered especially the ones that are related to capacity building of faculty members and availability of subject matter experts from industries.
