Remote Circuit Design Labs with Analog DiscoveryThe limited resources in the traditional labs have restricted the effective and innovative circuit designsfrom freshmen Circuits 1 class to capstone projects. The limited numbers of measuring and signal-generating instruments make it hard for students to engage in the experiment when they need to sharethe instruments or schedule to use them at a specific time. Furthermore, it is challenging for them tolearn various instruments including power supplies, multi-meters, oscilloscopes, function generators andso on separately. It is also impossible for students to acquire all of this expensive equipment and seteverything up at their residence.Under such constraints, students cannot gain the necessary hands-on experience. Sometimes, studentsplay usually a minimalist role leading typically to minimalist outcomes, weakening their accountabilityand curiosity. This will seriously lower the capability for circuit designs and eventually the necessaryengineering and technology skills.A new approach, in which everyone owns a circuit design station, is possible through the AnalogDiscovery. Students can conduct circuit designs at anywhere and anytime. They can even have their ownremote lab and create various analog or digital or mixed signal circuits. This paper will show howstudents can set up a remote laboratory to design and test circuits. The lab environment is the newlylaunched Analog Discovery from Digilent. Analog Discovery is a low cost and portable test andmeasurement device which provides various instruments including oscilloscope, arbitrary waveformgenerator, power supplies, voltmeter, logic analyzer and pattern generator in a single module. It ispowered by the WaveForms software. This paper will present labs to demonstrate the flexibility andeasy to design/test a circuit with Analog Discovery from any remote location.
