Abstract

Remote Control Monitoring of BioreactorsBioreactor is a system or a device that supports a biologically activeenvironment. Bioreactors are used as a primary device for fermentationby biochemical engineering researchers, to grow various cells andtissues and analyze them in the context of cell culturing. The Universityof Houston biotechnology program currently uses the New BrunswickScientific Bioflow 110 to grow transformed bacterial cells. This paperdetails a study of the primary control unit of a bioreactor and overallarchitecture of the bioreactor system and communication among itscomponents. The parameters of primary control unit of the bioreactorcan be accessed alternatively through a serial connection between thebioreactor and the desktop. Data sharing and exchange is done betweenthe onsite desktop and a remote server. It proposes the use ofdatabases for retrieving and sharing data between them for bettersecurity and generating alert e-mails when bioreactor values exceed theset range for the improvement of the existing system.
