Abstract

Science and Engineering Library - Accessible to Inner-City Communities ThroughScience 101Science 101 course in the University of British Columbia (UBC) provides an introductoryscience education in physics, astronomy, chemistry, computer science, earth and oceanscience, and biology for individuals who have historically had difficulty accessing a universityeducation - http://www.science.ubc.ca/support/community/101. There is no fee for thisfour-month, non-credit, barrier free course offered to residents of Vancouver's DowntownEastside and other inner-city communities, and no pre-requisite knowledge is required.For the last eight years, two UBC engineering librarians – Aleteia Greenwood and EugeneBarsky have worked with this class to offer library workshops to Science 101 students. Wehave offered library sessions focusing on the world of scientific information: how toapproach it, how to find research papers and books and how to evaluate the scienceinformation students find online.During our session, we describe the community of students we work with when teachingScience 101, methods we use to engage these students and what we have learned workingwith them. We will also describe specific exercises we use when trying to make our sessionsmore interactive and engaging, e.g. how to make a poster, how to write an abstract, how toevaluate resources in print and online.
